The fact that this was written ten years ago is terrifying.

I know right? I read it through before reposting and this line jumped out for me:

"What we also saw everywhere—during what turned out to be the hottest summer on record up to that point—was something global in scope: Climate Change."

That was 2014 and that record has been broken every single year since then! Astonishing!

Very eye-opening essay! This is one I'll have to digest over weeks if not longer.

We are so deeply immersed in this kind of "techno" society that it is hard to know where to begin and what to do to correct it. I've come across intimations of what the author is getting at in the writings of Lewis Mumford and a few others as far back as the 1960's but our destruction of the natural environment appears to have grown exponentially worse over the decades.

Is there no way out of this planetary death spiral?

PS I consider myself very frugal by American standards in my life style (e.g. I don't own a car) but I still come out at one and one half to two "global footprints" which means if everyone on earth lived my life style we would need one and one half to two earths to sustain that way of life. Most Americans probably have a "global footprint" of four or five or even more. How do we get out of this mess?
