Good article. I camped at Oak Flat this fall. It's a beautiful place and it would be utterly tragic if it were sacrificed.
I will *definitely* be addressing the topics in the article, including lithium mining, in this podcast. I visited some lithium claims in Oregon and Nevada this year, and helped with a plant survey. In many of these remote locations, there's been too little study of the ecosystems, so we don't even know what is under threat. One day I got to hang out with an archaeologist, and help scout for "diagnostics" (arrowheads and flakes). He is hoping to slow down the claims by demonstrating cultural sites.
But like the article says, the 19th century Mining Law in the US allows all sorts of things to happen without review or regulation. Still, the fight must go on!
