I lived in Portland from 2001-2010, and in the valley through 2013. in 2001, some friends and I tried to farm on a former grass seed field in Polk County near Monmouth and it was frankly a nightmare. Our crop failure rate was around 75%. The land was just ravaged. The toxic legacy in those kinds of places doesn't go away overnight!
I live here in the Willamette Valley. It is easy to see just how dramatically it has changed if you look close at all.
