Recommended Substacks for environmental advocacy
For keeping up & taking action in 2026
To round out the year (and give myself a little break from deep dive writing), here is a “best of” list post.
With Trump back in the White House, environmental advocacy became especially urgent in 2025. Not that the Dems don’t routinely support harmful policies, but Trump’s administration inflicted an unprecedented level of attacks on regulations, agencies, and public land. Were they to stop now, the amount of damage done will take years to repair; it’s much easier to tear things down than restore them. They’re not stopping now, though, and 2026 will be another year when action and organizing will be of utmost importance. So in that spirit, here are my favorite Substacks for environmental advocacy:
More Than Just Parks
I’m naming this one first for a reason. Brothers Jim Pattiz and Will Pattiz have been on it in 2025, calling attention to nearly every new attack, and encouraging us to respond, often with helpful sample scripts. Highly recommended!
Eco-Integrity Alliance
Important news and calls-to-action from an experienced advocate and journalist. Also features the Green Root podcast, an interview show with a smattering of rants. Find it wherever you listen to podcasts.
John Muir Project
There’s a lot of misinformation about wildfires circulating these days, and the John Muir Project can help set you straight on the facts and the science. Spoiler alert: logging doesn’t help, especially commercial logging.
Biocentric
Max Wilbert’s Substack is a mix of the practical and the philosophical, with subheadings like Collapse, Greenwashing, Resistance and Training.
Western Watersheds Project
With an emphasis on Wolves and on public lands ranching, this organization has been doing great work for over thirty years. Help swell their Substack audience by subscribing and following!
Basin & Range Watch
They haven’t been very active on Substack so far, but when they do post, they represent a perspective that’s all too rare: desert advocacy.
Wilderness Watch
Their sole focus is “the preservation and proper stewardship of lands and rivers included in the National Wilderness Preservation System.”
Public Lands Media
A megaphone for long-time writer and activist George Wuerthner, one of the nation’s foremost experts on public lands ranching. He also covers wilderness, wildlife, wildfire, and climate change.
Public Domain
“An independent environmental news desk that uses public records law, litigation and deep reporting experience to bring scoops, investigations and analysis to your inbox.” They proudly practice “adversarial journalism.” We need more of that!
What did I miss?
I’m sure there’s more that haven’t crossed my radar yet. If you have any favorites, please drop them in the comments!

Thanks for the shout-out, Kollibri!
