I’m happy to announce new benefits for paying subscribers to this Substack! Previously, the benefits were subscriber-only posts, and early access to podcast episodes. (The podcast will start up this year. I already have three interviews recorded, but unedited.)
I’ve self-published several books, so I’m pulling from that collection for these new benefits.
I’m considering these benefits retroactive to the beginning of this calendar year, so if you’ve already subscribed, shoot me an email or message me here on Substack and I’ll be happy to extend these to you.
$5 monthly subscription:
NEW: Digital downloads of TWO OF MY BOOKS, “The Failures of Farming & the Necessity of Wildtending” and “Roadtripping at the End of the World,” which I consider to be companion volumes.
A collection of essays I wrote between 2011 and 2018. I approach the basic thesis—"agriculture as wrong turn"—from different viewpoints and styles, varying from journalistic to scholastic to reflective to ranty, plus one interview.
A collection of essays and interviews from my travels around the USA from 2012-2019. A mix of personal narrative, science, history and current events, this book touches on ecology, agriculture, indigenous issues, rewilding, racism, gentrification, renewable energy, activism, western imperialism, architecture, metaphysics and more, all from an unabashedly leftist viewpoint.
$50 annual subscription
NEW: Substack won’t let me add an addidtional benefit for this category in the backend interface, but those who sign up for it will get digital downloads of FOUR OF MY BOOKS: The above two books, plus “Adventures in Urban Bike Farming” and “From Outside.”
“Adventures in Urban Bike Farming” is equal parts historical document, confessional memoir and social critique, this book tells the story of “Sunroot Gardens,” a bicycle-based urban farming operation that I founded and cultivated in Portland, Oregon, in the early 2000’s. Digital download features a section of color photography.
“From Outside” is a collection of forty two essays from 2016-2021, in which I explores a variety of topics including the environment, war, agriculture, settler colonialism, racism, patriarchy, media criticism, “green energy,” collapse and the nature of civilization itself. Stylistically, the selections vary from reporting to commentary to personal story telling.
